Talking Point – Esports, loot boxes and The Strategy Game

If the Chess Channel on Twitch has well-over half a million followers it shows that games that could be viewed as having less appeal than games that simulate football or motor racing for example have a place within the Esports arena.

The appeal of Goalscorer or other versions of The Strategy Game to Esports players and viewers could also be increased beyond its standard gameplay attributes in a number of other ways.

One way would be to work with specific brands which have different characters that can be used in different premium versions of the game, but only successful players could unlock the top characters to use in that premium version.

The Star Player counter could also have ‘loot box like functionality’ in theory but in practice this wouldn’t be suitable for games played by children.  The games industry knows that it’s only a matter of time before loot boxes are recognised as gambling even in jurisdictions where they aren’t banned or recognised as gambling now.  Rewarding the performance of the game player in premium versions of The Strategy Game to unlock special game counter characters doesn’t have to be tied to ‘loot-box like functionality’ and the innovative games publisher/investor will know this.
